The English Language Learner KnowledgeBase for Parents

The English Language Learner (ELL) KnowledgeBase for Parents is an online resource parent advocates can use to help parents understand the ELL student program available at their child's school. It offers resources related to parent rights under federal education laws and how parents can be involved in their child's education.

Task 2: Find Financial Resources

guideline: Rising tuition costs place attending college in jeopardy for many students. In particular, Hispanic families face a situation where increases in tuition costs are outstripping their ability to afford college for their children. Parents of English language learner students and their advocates need to be aware of the financial aid resources available and how to apply for assistance.

Scholarshps for Hispanic Students

This wesbsite for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) details how HSF, "empowers families with the knowledge and resources to successfully complete a higher education, while providing scholarships and support services to as many exceptional students as possible."


The English Language Learning Foundation Scholarships

Since 2006, the ELL Foundation has provided a total of $72,000 in scholarships to deserving ELL students.  This is the ELL Learning Foundation Inc. website which includes an oppportunity to donate to the foundation, a list ELL students awarded scholarships and criteria for scholarship awards.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute

As noted at its website, "the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) is one of the leading Hispanic non-profit and non-partisan 501(c) (3) organizations in the country. CHCI's mission has been to develop the next generation of Hispanic leaders. Its vision is an educated and civically active Hispanic community participating at the local, state and federal policy decision-making levels."


Paying for College

Ths website provides a series of reports from the National Public Radio on paying for college. Two of the reports specifically look at immigrant students: "College Aid Hard to Navigate for Immigrants' Kids" and "Making the College Scholarship System Work."
