The Writing Successful Grants KnowledgeBase is an online resource aiding education professionals in their pursuit of public and private grants to support local programs. Its five elements contain information and resources that assist the grant seeker with developing their project, writing the grant proposal and managing the grant upon its award.

Task 1: Explore Literacy in Grades 4-5

Guideline: It is important for district- and school-level educators to have an awareness of the nature of adolescent literacy development. Possessing such awareness enables grades four and five educators to develop more effective instructional strategies.

This link is to a What Works Clearinghouse practices guide addressing adolescent literacy. The guide evaluates the strength of the research on actions teachers and literacy specialists can take to improve adolescent literacy. 

 

NCTE Policy Research Brief: Adolescent Literacy

This link is to a National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) policy research brief on adolescent literacy. This document addresses "causes of concern," "common myths about adolescent literacy," "understanding adolescent literacy" and "research-based recommendations for effective adolescent literacy instruction."

 

Reading at Risk

This link is to the National Association of State Boards of Education's (NASBE's) 2006 study group report on middle and high school literacy. The report lists concerns and outlines what states can do to address adolescent literacy. This report is particularly useful to state education agency leaders and staff members.

 

Teaching All Students to Read in Elementary School A Guide for Prinicpals

This link is to a Center on Instruction guide for principals on teaching reading in elementary schools. As noted in its introduction, the document is intended "as a 'quick start' guide for a school-level instructional leader."
