The Writing Successful Grants KnowledgeBase is an online resource aiding education professionals in their pursuit of public and private grants to support local programs. Its five elements contain information and resources that assist the grant seeker with developing their project, writing the grant proposal and managing the grant upon its award.

Task 2: Research State Department of Education Initiatives

Guideline: Interaction with state policy makers is important to improving adolescent literacy. When working with state policy makers, local educators need information about and an awareness of state-level initiatives aimed at adolescent literacy.

Five States' Efforts to Improve Adolescent Literacy

This report by the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands describes the efforts of Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, New Jersey, and Rhode Island to improve adolescent literacy. As noted in the report's summary, "it examines how each state has engaged key stakeholders, set rigorous goals and standards, aligned resources to support adolescent literacy goals, built educator capacity, and used data to measure progress."

This Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) report identifies recommendations for SREB's member states to pursue related to adolescent literacy. Though the report's focus is on the southern states, its recommendations may be applicable to other states as well.

 

Reading at Risk

This link is to the National Association of State Boards of Education's (NASBE's) 2006 study group report on middle and high school literacy. The report lists concerns and outlines what states can do to address adolescent literacy. This report is particularly useful to state education agency leaders and staff members.

This National Governors Association guide for state governors outlines five strategies to pursue to improve adolescent literacy achievement.
