The Early Language and Literacy KnowledgeBase is an online resource supporting language and literacy development in early learners from birth through age eight. Task 5: Building Oral Language Skills With English Language Learners

Guideline: Pre-K, preschool and the primary grades are experiencing increasing enrollments of children with culturally diverse backgrounds. These students, while working to learn English as a second language, often come from homes where another language, typically the native language of the family, is the primarily spoken language. Building the oral language skills of English language learners involves babies, parents and caregivers interacting through the cues and sounds they share with each other in their home language. Building oral language skills in the child's native language helps to develop oral language skills in English, as well. This task provides information on building oral skills with early learners who are English language learners.
