Early Language & Literacy KnowledgeBase

This KnowledgeBase archive includes content and external links that were accurate and relevant as of September 30, 2019.

The Early Language and Literacy KnowledgeBase is an online resource supporting language and literacy development in early learners from birth through age eight. Its focus is to support parents and caregivers in helping early learners with their language and literacy development, and teachers in enhancing their instruction for early learners from pre-Kindergarten through Grade 3.

Task 3: Implement Curriculum with Fidelity

Guideline: As noted by the National Center for Children with Disabilities, fidelity of implementation is defined as “the extent to which the administration of an intervention complies with that intended in original design.” Educators of early learners need to have a general understanding of fidelity of implementation and how to assess its application with instruction. This task includes resources to help build this understanding.

Fidelity of Implementation

This link to the Principal's Research Review explores the importance of fidelity of implementation. Though oriented towards the Principal's role with fidelity of implementation, educators of early learners may find its content useful in gaining an understanding about the process.

Implementation Fidelity

This paper authored by the University of Colorado's Director and Co-Principal Investigator of the Blueprints for Violence Prevention Initiative Sharon Mihalic, explores factors affecting program fidelity. Though the paper's content is not specifically oriented to education, educators of early learners may find its content useful in gaining a general understanding of fidelity of program implementation. As noted at the University of Colorado website, "Sharon Mihalic, M.A., has been a researcher at the University of Colorado for 18 years. She has helped to facilitate all facets of work involved in conducting a major longitudinal, national sample to collect data on juvenile delinquency."

Monitoring Fidelity of Implementation

This resource from the Center on Innovation and Improvement reviews the importance of monitoring fidelity of implementation. Though intended for educators in leadership positions, educators of early learners may find it general content useful in gaining an understanding of fidelity of implementation.
