The Early Language and Literacy KnowledgeBase is an online resource supporting language and literacy development in early learners from birth through age eight. Its focus is to support parents and caregivers in helping early learners with their language and literacy development, and teachers in enhancing their instruction for early learners from pre-Kindergarten through Grade 3.

Task 1: Intentional Instruction and Developmentally Appropriate Practice

Guideline: Intentional instruction refers to instruction that has an explicit purpose. Educators of early learners should be familiar with the concept as they develop their instructional plans. This task provides resources explaining intentional instruction.




Developmentally Appropriate Practice

This link to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) website provides a definition of developmentally appropriate practice and a link to the NAEYC position statement on the subject.


Intentional Teaching

This link to the Read Tennessee website provides resources explaining intentional teaching. Though intended for Tennessee educators, educators of early learners in other states may find the content useful.
