The Early Language and Literacy KnowledgeBase is an online resource supporting language and literacy development in early learners from birth through age eight. Its focus is to support parents and caregivers in helping early learners with their language and literacy development, and teachers in enhancing their instruction for early learners from pre-Kindergarten through Grade 3.

Big Ideas in Beginning Reading: Phonemic Awareness

This link to the University of Oregon's Center on Teaching and Learner website provides information on the importance of phonemic awareness in teaching reading. The information addresses concepts and research, instruction and assessment. Educators of early learners may find this website helpful with teaching phonemic awareness.

 

Phonemic Awareness Activities

This link to the Los Angeles County (California) Office of Education website provides activities for phonemic awareness. Though intended for Los Angeles County teachers, kindergarten and first grade teachers in other states may find the activities helpful.

 

Student Center Activities Grades K-1

This link to the Florida Center for Reading Research website provides instructional materials for grades K-1 related to developing phonological awareness and building fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. At the site, teachers can download a professional development DVD and access instructional resources. Though intended for Florida teachers, teachers in other states may find the content useful.

This link to the Teaching Channel website provides a video of Kindergarten teacher giving a lesson on phonemics by acting out single-syllable words. The video runs approximately six minutes. A lesson plan and video transcript are available for for download.
