The Migrant Education KnowledgeBase supports educators associated with migrant education programs. It offers information about migrant education programs, regulations, and resources to help educators support the academic success of migrant students.

Element 1: Know the Basic Requirements for Migrant Education Programs

Purpose: The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Migrant Education "has several leadership initiatives in place to increase the capacity of state educational agencies, local school districts, schools, and other community organizations to continuously improve the educational outcomes attained by migrant children." These initiatives include identification and recruitment, comprehensive needs assessment, and student records exchange. Educators involved with migrant programs need to be aware of these initiatives and their local application.

Element 2: Help Migrant Students

Purpose: As noted by the Office of Migrant Education, "The goal of the Migrant education program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a General Equivalency Diploma/GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment." Programs such as college assistance, high equivalency, bi-national, Even Start, and migrant health aid in reaching that goal.
