Print Concepts
The ELQA Print Concepts assessment consists of 10 items and measures the child’s understanding of the organization and basic features of print (e.g., story title, where to begin reading, which direction to read, return sweep, word-by-word pointing, and meaning of punctuation).
Expressive Vocabulary
The Expressive Vocabulary assessment consists of 20 items and measures the child’s ability to identify pictures based on academic, domain-appropriate, grade-level vocabulary encountered in the classroom, children’s literature, and everyday life (e.g., animals, body parts, clothing, food, common objects, nature, people, tools, toys, and transportation).
Rhyming
The Rhyming assessment consists of 10 items and measures the child’s ability to recognize and produce words that rhyme.
- Rhyme Recognition: five items measure the child’s ability to recognize whether a pair of words rhyme (e.g., cat and hat).
- Rhyme Generation: five items measure the child's ability to generate a word that rhymes with a word spoken by the teacher.
Uppercase Alphabet
The Uppercase Alphabet assessment consists of 26 items and measures the child’s ability to name each letter of the alphabet presented in uppercase.
Lowercase Alphabet
The Lowercase Alphabet assessment consists of 26 items and measures the child’s ability to name each letter of the alphabet presented in lowercase.
Letter Sounds
The Letter Sounds assessment consists of 26 items and measures the child’s ability to say the sound of each letter of the alphabet.
Alliteration
The Alliteration assessment consists of 10 items and measures the child's ability to isolate and pronounce the same initial sounds in a set of spoken words (e.g., “pokey puppy pounces”).
Syllable Segmenting
The Syllable Segmentation assessment consists of 10 items and measures the child's ability to pronounce, segment, and delete syllables in spoken words (e.g., “Say 'teacup'. Now say it again without 'cup'.”).
Phoneme Blending and Segmenting
The Phoneme Blending and Segmenting assessment consists of 10 items and measures the child's ability to blend and segment phonemes.
- Phoneme Blending: five items measure the child’s ability to blend phonemes (sounds) into words (e.g., /c/ /a/ /t/= cat).
- Phoneme Segmenting: five items measure the child’s ability to break words into their component sounds (e.g., “fast” = /f/ /a/ /s/ /t/).
Phoneme Deletion and Substitution
The Phoneme Deletion and Substitution assessment consists of 10 items and measures the child's ability to delete and substitute phonemes.
- Phoneme Deletion: five items measure the child’s ability to delete initial phonemes in words (e.g., “Remove the /p/ from “pin,” to say “in”.).
- Phoneme Substitution: five items measure the child's ability to substitute initial phonemes in words (e.g., “Change the /d/ in “dog” to /f/ to say “fog”.").
Phonics
The Phonics Assessment consists of 10 items and measures the child's ability to blend letter sounds to decode simple Vowel/Consonant (VC) words (e.g., at, in, up) and Consonant/Vowel/Consonant (CVC) words (e.g., pat, hen, lot).
Fluency
The Fluency Assessment measures the child's ability to read their first and last name, and common high frequency grade-level words by sight (e.g., was, you, she).
Comprehension
The Comprehension Assessment consists of a story read aloud by the teacher and eight items that measure the child's ability to retell major events from the story, recognize the main idea, tell what is happening in a picture or illustration, sequence the events, discriminate between fiction and nonfiction, and answer basic questions (e.g., who, what, where, and when).
