MONITOR PROGRESS ON THE FOLLOWING SKILLS

Print Concepts

The ELQA Print Concepts assessment measures the child’s understanding of the organization and basic features of print (e.g., story title, where to begin reading, which direction to read, return sweep, word-by-word pointing, and meaning of punctuation). 

Expressive Vocabulary

The Expressive Vocabulary assessment measures the child’s ability to identify pictures based on academic, domain-appropriate, grade-level vocabulary encountered in the classroom, children’s literature, and everyday life (e.g., animals, body parts, clothing, food, common objects, nature, people, tools, toys, and transportation). 

Rhyming

The Rhyming assessment measures the child’s ability to recognize and produce words that rhyme.  

Uppercase Alphabet

The Uppercase Alphabet assessment measures the child’s ability to name each letter of the alphabet presented in uppercase.   

Lowercase Alphabet

The Lowercase Alphabet assessment measures the child’s ability to name each letter of the alphabet presented in lowercase.

Letter Sounds

The Letter Sounds assessment measures the child’s ability to say the sound of each letter of the alphabet. 

Alliteration

The Alliteration assessment measures the child's ability to isolate and pronounce the same initial sounds in a set of spoken words.

Syllable Segmenting

The Syllable Segmentation assessment measures the child's ability to pronounce, segment, and delete syllables in spoken words.

Phoneme Blending and Segmenting

The Phoneme Blending and Segmenting assessment measures the child's ability to blend and segment phonemes.

Phoneme Deletion and Substitution

The Phoneme Deletion and Substitution assessment measures the child's ability to delete and substitute phonemes.

Phonics

The Phonics Assessment measures the child's ability to blend letter sounds to decode simple Vowel/Consonant (VC) words and Consonant/Vowel/Consonant (CVC) words.

Fluency

The Fluency Assessment measures the child's ability to read their name and common high frequency grade-level words by sight.

Comprehension

The Comprehension Assessment consists of a story read aloud by the teacher and eight items that measure the child's ability to retell major events from the story, recognize the main idea, tell what is happening in a picture or illustration, sequence the events, discriminate between fiction and nonfiction, and answer basic questions (e.g., who, what, where, and when).
