Summer 2024 Update from the Southwest Center for Human Relations Studies

Published: Thursday, August 8, 2024

Greetings to all from the Southwest Center for Human Relations Studies! As we dive into the vibrant summer months of 2024, we are thrilled to reflect on the resounding success of NCORE 2024, held in Honolulu from May 28th to June 1st. This year's conference marked a significant milestone with the highest-ever registration of 5,467 attendees, representing nearly 1,200 institutions from across the United States. The decision to host NCORE in Honolulu provided a unique backdrop to explore pressing issues at the intersection of climate change and justice, native Hawaiian rights and sovereignty, and the challenges faced by place-based communities.

The picturesque setting of Honolulu not only enriched the conference discussions but also underscored the importance of addressing these critical themes in a context deeply connected to the land and its people. Participants engaged in dynamic sessions, workshops, and dialogues that delved into these complex topics, fostering learning, collaboration, and actionable strategies for advancing change.

As we look ahead, our focus shifts to the future. Currently, we are immersed in the planning for NCORE 2025 during our program planning retreat. This pivotal event will build on the momentum and insights gained from NCORE 2024, aiming to push boundaries, and set new benchmarks for the conference.

In addition to NCORE, we are excited to announce the upcoming 3rd annual Reels on Human Relations Film Festival (TBA), which showcases compelling narratives from student filmmakers across the country. This festival continues to be a platform for emerging voices to share their perspectives on human relations through the powerful medium of film. Stay tuned for more details on this inspiring event.

Furthermore, mark your calendars for NCORE Connections, scheduled for October 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2025. This three-day virtual conference will feature dynamic keynotes, interactive sessions, and networking opportunities. What's more, all sessions will be available on demand for a full year after the live event, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for participants worldwide.

As we navigate through the bustling summer months, we at SWCHRS remain committed to our mission of organizing learning communities on issues of human conflict and resolution. Together, we are shaping a future where inclusivity and respect for all are not just ideals, but realities.
