Julie Tate - Retirement

Published: Thursday, August 8, 2024

Julie Tate, a remarkable individual whose contributions have left an enduring mark on the University of Oklahoma, has retired after 22 years.

Julie graduated cum laude from Oklahoma City University with a BA in Mass Communications and went on to earn her Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma, School of Law.  During her time in law school, she attended Oxford University’s Summer Studies program in Comparative International Law.  This transformative experience, coupled with her subsequent travels, sparked a lifelong love of exploring new cultures.

Julie’s illustrious career began at West Publishing, the largest publisher of legal materials in the United States.  Over the course of 17 years she rose through five positions, starting as an Account Manager, teaching computer-assisted legal research to attorneys and judges.  She then progressed to roles such as Product Development Specialist, National education Coordinator, Branch Manager, and finally, Regional Manager.  In her last seven years as Regional Manager, Julie negotiated Extensive contracts, managed a staff of 22 attorneys, and was responsible for $27 million in revenue.

In 2002, Julie joined University Outreach at the University of Oklahoma as the Contract Administrator for the Division of Public and Community Services.  By 2005, she had risen to the role of Director of Contract Administration, where she drafted and negotiated grants and contracts, acted as a liaison to the Office of Legal Counsel, and advised Executive Officers on legal, compliance, policy, and complex business issues.  Her excellence was recognized with the Outreach Innovation Award in 2011 and the Merit Award for Outstanding Outreach Employee in 2013.

Beyond her professional achievements, Julie’s passion for helping others is evident in her work with Bridges of Norman, a group dedicated to empowering high school students from families in crisis to pursue their education without obstacles.  For years Julie has been mentoring and donating her time there and now serves on the board of directors.  Her dedication to this cause is a testament to her big heart and commitment to making a difference.

Julie’s dedication and willingness to help whenever and wherever were invaluable.  Her intellect, dedication and compassion, has not only advanced our goals, but enriched our lives.
